Are Hemp Sheets Scratchy or Soft to the Touch?

Are Hemp Sheets Scratchy or Soft to the Touch?

Are hemp sheets really scratchy, or am I just imagining things?

I’ve heard it all. "Oscar, mate, aren’t hemp sheets rough?" or my personal favourite, "Does sleeping on hemp feel like lying down in a hessian sack?" First, ouch—do people even know what a hessian sack feels like? But jokes aside, it’s a valid question. So, let’s have a proper chat about it.

The hemp fabric misconception

I admit it. When Jess and I first decided to start Jo Dope, we knew we’d have to battle some hemp stereotypes. Hemp fabric isn't that scratchy, rough, potato-bag-like material everyone thinks it is. Okay, maybe it used to be, but thankfully, we've moved on from the medieval days. Modern hemp bedding, the kind we proudly stock, is honestly softer than your favourite cotton tee (the one you've washed about fifty times too many).

Actually, hemp sheets feel a lot like linen but less temperamental, thank goodness. There's a textured softness that grows more comfortable the more you sleep on them. I should know—I've practically become a professional nap tester at this stage.

If you're still sceptical, here's a neat breakdown of hemp fabric’s good, bad, and scratchy. Spoiler alert: it's not scratchy.

Do hemp sheets really get softer?

The short answer—absolutely. The more you wash your hemp sheets, the softer they become. Seriously, hemp's like a good mate—it just gets better with age. This isn't marketing spin either (well, not much anyway); it’s one of hemp's natural characteristics. Something to do with fibres breaking down gently over time, giving you softer sheets every wash. Don’t worry, they won’t disintegrate on you. Promise!

Speaking from experience, when Jess and I first tested our prototype sheets, we felt the softness upgrade every single wash. After about the fifth wash, it felt like sleeping on a gentle cloud made of marshmallows. Okay, slight exaggeration, but you get the point.

Here's another handy resource if you’re keen on the technical bits about hemp fabric’s durability and softness.

But Oscar, cotton and linen exist—why hemp?

Great question, glad you asked. Sure, cotton and linen sheets are nice, but hemp sheets? They're on another level entirely. First off, hemp is naturally antimicrobial, breathable, and incredibly durable. In summer, they're airy enough to stop you feeling like a roasted chicken. In winter, they'll keep you snug enough to survive a Melbourne cold snap.

There are quite a few differences between hemp sheets and linen sheets, and there's a strong reason we believe hemp sheets are better. (Show product carousel here)

Let's bust some myths

Here's one I hear all the time: “Oscar, hemp sheets must wrinkle like crazy.” Well, let's be real—every sheet wrinkles a bit. But hemp sheets wrinkle significantly less than linen. Plus, a slight wrinkle here or there just adds character. At least that's what I tell myself.

Oh, and the second myth: “Hemp sheets must be itchy!” Nope. Not even slightly. I've never scratched myself awake in the middle of the night, wondering if bed bugs have invaded. But if you're genuinely worried, I’ve even written about whether hemp fabric feels itchy. (Show product carousel here)

Are hemp sheets good for sensitive skin?

Speaking as someone who once tried every moisturiser in the chemist, yes, hemp sheets are wonderful for sensitive skin. They're naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial. Unlike synthetic sheets that might irritate your skin, hemp lets your skin breathe and relax. No more morning redness or irritation.

Let's get personal—my verdict

When Jess and I first jumped into hemp bedding, I was quietly nervous. But honestly? I've never looked back. Hemp sheets are genuinely soft, get even softer over time, and they're better for the environment. The only downside? You might become overly attached to your bed. But is that really a bad thing?
