Is Hemp Fabric as Good as Linen?

Is Hemp Fabric as Good as Linen?

Ever stood in front of your wardrobe, scratching your head, wondering if hemp sheets could ever feel as dreamy as linen?

I’ve asked myself that very question countless times (usually in pyjamas, with a coffee in hand). And as someone who’s built a whole business around the joys of hemp bedding, I reckon it’s about time we settled this debate—hemp versus linen—once and for all.

Getting to Know Hemp and Linen

Let’s be real, both linen and hemp fabrics have a rep for sustainability and breathability. Linen is a classic favourite, made from flax fibres, while hemp comes from, well, the hemp plant—an unsung hero I clearly can’t stop talking about (seriously, just ask my friends).

But let’s talk fibres first. Hemp fibres tend to be a bit coarser and shorter than linen. Historically, this made hemp perfect for ropes, canvas sails, and even paper. Linen, being finer and smoother, naturally landed in your grandma’s cupboard as crisp summer dresses and soft bed sheets.

But wait—before you go all-in on linen—here’s a little secret: it’s all in the treatment. Hemp fibres soften dramatically with the right processing and each wash, meaning your sheets just get better and comfier over time. I’ve even heard stories of hemp bedding becoming a family heirloom (true story—my neighbour told me about passing hers down!).

Here's a handy article I stumbled across explaining these similarities and differences further.

Durability…The Tough Love of Bedding

When it comes to toughness, hemp is basically the Chuck Norris of fabrics—it’s hard-wearing and lasts ages. Linen isn’t too shabby either, but hemp fibres are naturally stronger and more resistant to wear and tear. If you’re like me (I roll around a lot in my sleep—no judgement), durable bedding means fewer replacements and happier mornings.

Here's an extra quick read if you’re as curious about fibre strength as I am.

Comfort Check, 1-2-3

I know what you’re thinking: “Oscar, hemp sounds great, but is it itchy?” Totally fair question. Admittedly, hemp fabric starts off a tad rougher compared to linen. However, after a couple of washes, it becomes beautifully soft. Like wearing in your favourite jeans—only quicker, without those awkward squats you do around the house (we’ve all been there).

If you’re still sceptical, check out our own article on is hemp itchy? Spoiler alert: it's not!

There’s also a great conversation floating around about boiling fibres with washing soda to soften them—something both hemp and linen users have sworn by (I’m thinking about trying it this weekend!).

Temperature Regulation, Aussie Style

Anyone who’s ever sweated through an Aussie summer night knows the importance of breathable bedding. Hemp and linen both score top marks here. But hemp's got a sneaky bonus: superior insulation. It keeps you toasty in winter and cool in summer—a total blessing for those unpredictable Melbourne weather changes.

Let’s Talk Sustainability

Alright, you knew this was coming. Sustainability is kinda my thing. Hemp cultivation is a clear winner—it needs way less water, absolutely no pesticides, and it’s like the lazy gardener’s dream crop. Linen’s environmentally friendly too, but hemp nudges ahead thanks to lower water use and quicker growth cycles.

Our article on hemp vs cotton and polyester covers more sustainability details.

Cost-Effectiveness: The Wallet-Friendly Fabric

Initially, hemp products might seem pricier—but trust me, it’s a worthwhile investment. Hemp’s durability means fewer replacements, saving your wallet (and the planet) in the long run. And if you’re like me, every dollar counts—especially when I have an espresso habit to maintain.

Curious about cost? We’ve broken it down right here.

Ready to Make Your Bed?

If you’re still tossing and turning over hemp vs linen, my vote’s always gonna be hemp (obviously!). Not just because I run a hemp bedding business, but because I genuinely believe it’s the smarter, comfier, and more sustainable option. Linen’s cool too, but I’ve yet to see it match hemp’s long-term softness and strength combo.
